231 - Abbreviated Dialing for SIP Endpoints
closed
Randy Lance
With the upgrade and migration from H.323 stations to SIP endpoints, we lose the ability to add/use abbreviated dialing for deskphones. Current Avaya recommendation - "You cannot assign abbreviated dialing buttons to SIP deskphones. SIP deskphone users can program the FAC and dial code number against a Contact or against a Speed Dial entry."

Another option is to put autodial buttons on the phones (either directly or via the template). The autodial buttons can reference the target directly OR can reference a FAC to access a speed-dial list. SMGR also allows you to build "public" contacts and add them to SIP accounts, they can then be added as favorite buttons by the user. I will say that managing contacts in SMGR is very inelegant and I'm surprised somebody hasn't opened a Feature Request suggesting ways to make contact management better.

Randy,
The SIP protocol itself does not have the concept of Abbreviated Dial Buttons -- that concept has been replaced with Contacts. In our environment, we've been very successful in importing abbreviated dialing string as contacts and deploying those out to users. You can template those buttons just like you did Abbr-dial strings, with only a few exceptions. An advantage of using contacts is if they are pointing to a user's extension you also get presence information automatically. Those contacts can be imported via System Manager (user import), and if you use a template or modify the station in SMGR, you can place the button pretty much anywhere on the screen.
Is that something you've been able to try?
